Laser Dance

by Bob Boilen

This piece, commissioned by Maida Withers Dance Construction Company, was performed only once at Lisner Auditorium in 1985. Dancers performed on a stage filled with laser beams bouncing off a series of mirrors. Laser artist Rockne Krebs designed the elaborate series of light beams. I scored the work on a Synclavier II that I'd set up in the orchestra pit. I also had a series of light sensors on the mirrors and when dancers broke the beam of light it would trigger different sounds that ran from a 4-track cassette player. Guitarist Robert Goldstein joined me in that live performance. This music is the original score minus the extra sound and without Robert Goldstein's guitar. I recently discovered a documentary film of the performance. You can watch that here.
